Lechia Gdansk extended their winning run with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away to Stal Rzeszow in the I Liga. A two-goal first-half cushion proved enough despite a nervy finish and two missed penalties by the hosts.
The win in Rzeszow marks a fourth consecutive league victory for Lechia, solidifying their 4th place in the table with 16 points from 10 matches. It's their fifth win in the last five league outings, a run that has propelled them up the standings.
Lechia's Fast Start
The match was decided in a blistering first-half spell. Vahan Blanuta opened the scoring in the 36th minute, finishing off a move started by Artem Shakh. Just four minutes later, Danylo Beskorovaynyi doubled the advantage after being set up by Denys Malov. The quick double gave the visitors from Gdansk a comfortable lead to take into the break.
The dynamics shifted after halftime. Stal Rzeszow applied sustained pressure and were rewarded in the 77th minute when Artur Buksa pulled one back, assisted by Sebastian Goss. The goal ignited the hosts and set up a tense finale.
A Festival of Wasted Penalties
The defining chapter of the match was Stal's profligacy from the penalty spot. The home side had a golden chance to level the score but squandered two penalties. Lechia goalkeeper Mateusz Abramowicz saved the first, and the second was blasted over the bar. Those missed opportunities allowed Lechia to cling on to their narrow lead until the final whistle.
Lechia's manager acknowledged his team had to show resilience. "We did a good job in the first half, scoring two goals and controlling the game," he said. "After the break it was more difficult, the pressure increased, but we defended the result."
This result continues an impressive spell of form for Lechia, who have also beaten Ruch Chorzow 3-1, Stal Mielec 7-1, and Miedz Legnica 2-1 in recent weeks. It helps erase the memory of a defeat to Nieciecza in early September. The full squad list and player statistics are available in our squad and stats sections.
Next up for Lechia is a derby clash at home against Arka Gdynia on Sunday, October 18th. Their rivals currently sit 16th in the table, theoretically making Lechia favourites, but derbies are always unpredictable.
