Lechia Gdansk on Friday will receive the decision on its license to play in the PKO Ekstraklasa for the 2025/26 season after paying off almost PLN 3 million owed to players. The PZPN Club Licensing Appeals Committee is set to approve the request, and the club hopes for a positive verdict.

What happened?

In the first deadline Lechia failed to obtain a license because it did not meet criterion F.05 – financial forecast. President Paolo Urfer, the sporting director and board members traveled to Warsaw to present new documents and explanations. On Thursday the club announced it had settled all debts to its players, with the money already deposited into their accounts. This is the first step, but the final decision comes on Friday.

Why does it matter for Lechia?

Without a license the club cannot compete in the Ekstraklasa, which would mean dropping to a lower division and losing TV and sponsor revenue. Lechia Gdansk sits in 16th place in the Ekstraklasa, 38 pts, 12 W‑7 D‑15 L after 34 games, and its last result was a 3‑2 defeat to Nieciecza on 23 May 2026. The team also has a goal balance of 62‑65 (‑3). Keeping the license is the only way to fight for a better situation.

What are the chances of a positive decision?

The appeals committee will verify the submitted documents and confirm that Lechia meets all licensing requirements. If it does, the club will receive the green light and can continue its battle in the league despite the worst run in the last five matches (LLLLL). Otherwise, it risks losing its place in Poland’s top football tier.

What comes next after the decision?

If the license is granted, the board will have to focus on reversing the negative trend – improving form and reducing the goal deficit. The coach will have limited time to implement tactical changes, and the transfer market may bring new players if finances allow. For supporters, the key will be to see whether Lechia can break the losing streak and fight out of the relegation zone.

Lechia Gdansk therefore counts not only on the formal confirmation of the license but also on a chance to change its fate in a league where it currently sits 16th with 38 points, and the last five games have all ended in defeats.
